If the transfer has no second contour before pressing but the finished product gains a faint shifted copy, find the moment of relative movement between paper and blank: during placement, closing, dwell, opening or separation of the hot layers. Keep the current confirmed recipe and change only one movement stage per test.
First distinguish ghosting from other defects
The useful clue is a directional “shadow”: a lighter copy appears beside a sharp edge with a similar offset in different parts of the image. Compare the finished product with the transfer under magnification and mark the shadow direction with an arrow.
The second copy is absent from the transfer, has one direction and appeared only after transfer.
The doubled edge is already printed; the defect is a band, speckling, bleeding or uneven fading without a directional copy.
The official Sawgrass sublimation glossary describes ghosting as a faint, blurred double image caused by transfer movement during pressing. This identifies the mechanism but does not establish a universal recipe for every blank.
Break the cycle into five moments of movement
Placement. The transfer moves while it is aligned on the blank or while the assembled stack is carried to the press.
Closing. The platen, pad or airflow pulls an unsecured edge before first contact.
Dwell. The blank changes shape or the stack creeps under load; distinguish this from uneven heating.
Opening. A sudden platen movement or airflow shifts the hot transfer while dye can still move.
Separation. The paper slides back across the hot surface or touches it again while the product is moved.
Secure the stack for the exact blank
Check the blank, transfer-paper and ink-system manufacturers’ instructions for how and where the transfer may be secured. If they allow heat-resistant tape, use the minimum sufficient fixation outside the image so the stack cannot slide. Use self-adhesive transfer paper only in a compatible process.
A check without guessing: mark the relative position of paper and blank with two small control marks outside the product. After each stage, see whether their distance or orientation changed.
Do not introduce an unknown adhesive, spray or tape into the hot zone without explicit permission in the documentation: its heat resistance, residue and surface interaction do not follow from the word “fixation”.
Open and separate the layers as a controlled operation
At the end of the cycle, open the press smoothly within the mechanism’s normal operation. Follow the removal method specified for the exact paper and blank: hot, warm and cold separation are not interchangeable by habit. If the transfer must be removed immediately, hold the blank still and lift the paper without sliding it across the image.
Do not stack finished hot products so that the transfer or printed surfaces can touch again. Prepare a safe cooling area before the test begins.
Change one action and record the shadow direction
Test A — placement. Assemble and secure the stack on a stationary surface, then carry it without realigning it.
Test B — closing. With fixation unchanged, close slowly and symmetrically within the press instructions.
Test C — opening and removal. Prepare a place for the product, open without a jerk and separate the layers as the manufacturer specifies.
For each test, use a new identical blank and the same control artwork. Record only the presence, direction and distance of the second contour. If the defect consistently disappears after one stage changes, the cause is localised; if not, do not change temperature, time and pressure together.
Stop the series if the blank deforms, the permitted fixation method is unknown, the press moves with a jerk, or the defect has no stable relationship to one stage. This is the boundary for manufacturer documentation or service diagnosis, not a reason to raise every setting.
